Annie Clavel

Annie imagines mathematical theories in color, shapes, light and movement. Theories are worlds where she likes to wander, inventing moments, emotions, and stories. Her colorful surfaces depict universes driven by quantum mechanics or mathematical concepts. These surfaces also depict her current feelings which depend on her observations, on her readings, and what life brings to her.

Her vision of cosmology has had a deep influence on her art. She has in mind the huge amount of growth and evolution that our Universe underwent from the Big Bang to the present day. Early universe, dark matter, exoplanets, black holes, clusters of galaxies out into space and back in time are a source of inspiration.

Her mixed media paintings and watercolors on YUPO combine a variety of nuanced colors, a multitude of diverse brush strokes and alternating textures. She builds up layers, then subtracts, adds, partially covers, scratches and scrapes the surface to create the effects she seeks.

These techniques bring her closer to the way she imagines the cosmos and the infinity in mathematics.

Annie Clavel is a mixed-media abstract painter who grew up in Paris, France. With a background in mathematics and computer science, she taught mathematics in both France and Tunisia before moving to Long Beach in 2006. There, she opened an art gallery and embarked on her career as a professional artist.

Drawing inspiration from her scientific background, Annie explores themes of perpetual motion in space since the Big Bang and the concept of infinity. Her paintings evoke cosmic landscapes, mystical nature, emotions, and untold stories.

Her artwork is part of private collections in France, Tunisia, Germany, Canada, Japan, and the United States. Annie is an active member of the Los Angeles Art Association (Gallery 825) and serves as a board member of Women Painters West. Until November 2023, she held roles as Chair of Marketing and Treasurer at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art.
