This body of work is a celebration the of the lives of "working girls" from a Deadwood Brothel. The black and white photographs taken at Bea Wheelers Annex Rooms ca. 1943 have become the inspiration for this body of work.

The subjects in these paintings represent a cross section of women from various backgrounds brought into this lifestyle because of necessity.Confronted with the harsh realities of their everyday lives, these women were able to share in the simple joys and bonds of friendship and sisterhood. These candid images offer some insight into the actual lives of some prostitutes in Deadwood without glamorizing their situation. It has been my intent to tell their story through my oil paintings

Ben humphrey was born Chadron Neb. but grew up in the LA area. In his youth he studied privately with a master painter, who taught him many techniques . Exploring on his own mastered the art of decorative and faux finishes, implementing them in private homes and public spaces including historic restoration. A fine oil painter with traditional painting techniques he has been inspired by many great painters from the past and present. Still living in the LA area, he tries to spend some of his time in the Black Hills of SD a place where he draws great inspiration from.
