Biography

BiJian Fan was born in Beijing, China. He learned to fold and cut paper from his grandmother who led him into a paper wonderland. He cultivated his childhood fantasy from making paper airplane, boats, and animals. Today, BiJian is still pushing the envelop to create cutting-edge paper sculpture, but his media have expanded to metal, polymer, fiber, and other materials.

BiJian explores aesthetic and physical properties of various media, integrates various alternative sculptural techniques into his artistry, transforms 2D static material into 3D kinetic sculptures. His kinetic sculptures interact with surrounding environment, energize the space, represent an evolution in space and time.

BiJian studied in China, Japan, and USA, earned his BS and MS in Mathematics, Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He continues to expand his knowledge in material science and advance his spatial and temporal sense in sculpting. By day he is a biotech engineer, but by night, he creates the sculptures of his imagination at home in Camarillo, California.

BiJian has exhibited nationally and earned numerous awards. He also exhibited in his hometown for Beijing Olympics.
