Carlton Davis

I do drawings when I make art. I am interested in marks that are expressive of emotional, political, and historical meaning. I ike to play on form, composition, and light. The drawings I would submit to this competitiion are enormous- three to four feet wide and in some cases over eight feet tall. They are so large that the marks in their making can no no longer be precious. They become gestural, quick, and rough. I am trying to capture the ellusive nature of the inelluctable light that falls on any reality whether that light is the true light as filtered through the atmosphere, the eye, the attitude, or the history book.

Artist, Architect and writer. I have been a member of the Los Angeles art community for 30 years. Exhibited in downtown Los Angeles at AAA art Gallery, Exile, and the Downtown lives shows for several years. For 6 years- 1980 -1986, ran the Art Dock, the drive-by art gallery in downtown Los Angeles, about which I am currently writing a book. I have worked in colaboration with other artists including Pamela Burgess on the Los Angeles Mission and James Doolin on the North Hollywood Subway Station. My current book \\\"bipolar bare\\\" is a memoir of my life\\\'s journey with mental disorder and is filled with 32 illustration by me, including self-portraits, one of my enormous drawings, and other sketches. I have written for several art journals including Coagula. I consider myself to be a renaissance man in the 21st Century.
