Statement

When I first viewed the paintings of Alberto Mijangos I was mesmerized by the magic in the painting. I could gaze for hours at a single piece , large or small, and discover shapes, colors, strokes emerging and then receding while new ones emerged. This was painting which I could get excited about! I was introduced into his world of painting and was mentored by him for 2 years. I can remember that “aha!” moment when I was painting to manipulate the paint, strokes and colors methodically in order to produce a specific resulting image and suddenly the whole process was transformed into a dialogue with the painting: a stroke here, a splash of paint there, stillness, then letting the painting guide me as to what to do next. I was rocketed into a fourth dimension.

Since then I have experienced many more “aha!” moments as I explored the nature of my medium, pushed it to the limit and discovered new ways of expressing the vision I had first given birth to.

Some may call my paintings “Portraits”, but I see them as another vehicle for expressing this “nature” of the paint, ever coaxing the observer to look beyond the one personified to the various colors blending or contrasting with the colors placed beside them, the strokes of the bristle brush stacking colors one upon the others, creating a small world of images into a series of worlds jumping out at the viewer as his/ her eyes travel the surface of the canvas, panel or paper. A figurative painting which happens to be a portrait
