Lesley Krane

I am greatly influenced by concepts of domesticity, the traditions those concepts suggest, and the roles assumed by women who inhabit domestic spaces. Also, I have resigned myself to the fact that I am quite suggestible to the “shoulds\" of those domestic roles. Departing from the photographs I usually make, the objects from the \"lift\" series reflect my affection for the subjectivity of personal ritual. Craft store felt and sealing wax complement relic-like remnants of hair that have been removed from my body. Rather than discard the wax-encrusted hairs, I hand stitch them onto felt with a seal bearing the initial of the cosmetologist who performed the ritual.

Born in Los Angeles, Lesley Krane earned an A.A. degree in Photography at Santa Monica College, got a B.A. in Art at UCLA, then earned an M.F.A. in Studio Art at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in 1995. She began teaching Photography in the Art Department at CSUN in 1999 and has been a member of the full-time faculty there since 2002. Committed to the practice of still photography, Lesley teaches her students to have a reverence and sensitivity for the medium. She is a published artist and has exhibited her work at local and national venues.
