Lynden Cline

I create narrative sculptures which center around issues of personal identity and family. Having a complicated history, it is difficult to assign specific meaning. Working with emotional material pre-dating even my own birth, I submerge myself in the painful feelings…

It is difficult to say what each piece means, or what each element means. I try to just move steadily forward. I typically do no sketching, no concept work. Using a torch I start making an element, not knowing why or what I will do with it. A chair. A tree. A circular shape which I begin to see as a link and then a chain.

I am overwhelmed by the reaction people have to my work. I was especially moved by a review in SCULPTURE Magazine which referred to my work as “metaphors for Lynden’s emotional history” and went on:

Focused primarily on sculpture I have been featured in many solo and group exhibitions in cities including Washington DC, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles.

I have been making art for the past 20 years after leaving a marketing career where I developed strategies, directed market research, and created and produced promotional programs for Fortune 100 companies (such as Procter & Gamble and Honda.)

I taught at the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington D.C. At the request of the Chair of the Sculpture Department, I designed a course to expose under-graduate and continuing education students to thought processes and techniques for communicating personal experiences and concerns through the execution of individual projects.

Active in art and community associations, I was invited to join the board of Washington (D.C.) Sculptors Group, a non-profit organization with over 370 members founded in 1984 to promote an awareness and understanding of sculpture. I was quickly elected to President where I directed a 12-member board and won the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts.

I recently developed Creativity Grows On Trees (But Trees Need Strong Roots) which provides strategies, tools and fundamentals to allow artists, writers and others to get in touch (or keep in touch) with what it takes to be creative through presentations, lectures, blog posts, recommendations & resources, as well as a 6-week course.
