Norma Jean Squires

My earlier work investigated what technology has uncovered for us by way of exploration space and discoveries in quantum worlds. My recent praxes have segued into more celebratory stances, a concession perhaps to a ten-year involvement with Spanish dance. Flamenco is a discipline that incorporates spins, spirals and swirls that are metaphorical for the motions of particles and galaxies.

So my perceptions of the rhythms and energies of inner and outer space have been redesigned to offer a glimpse of one of multiple interconnections linking us to these other worlds.

The media used in these pieces include iridescent and interference colors. This is not always apparent in photos because they rely on the light source to be seen. They are, however, effective because as with any reflective element, another dimension is brought into play.

Canadian-born artist, Norma Squires has exhibited nationally and internationally. Those venues include: the East Hampton Gallery, NYC; New York's Museum of Modern Art lending library; Gallery Moos, Toronto; Galeria Vandres, Madrid, Spain; a solo at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY; La Jolla Museum of Art and, more recently, Nagasaki Museum, Japan; Pyong Taek City, Korea; Bangkok University, Thaiand; Yerevan, Armenia and Galerie Gronard, Paris, France. In addition to being represented in many private collections her work is in such public collections as Sterling Forest Gardens, NYC, Warner Bros. Records, Burbank, CA; Seiman's Pacesetter Systems, L.A. CA; Redwood City Pubic Library; the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, CA; Le Chateau des Reaux, France, etc.

Squires is also a writer with feature articles published in various catalogs. She has curated several exhibitions among which are, "Angels, Ancestors and Spirit Guides" and "Quarks to Quasars". She has illustrated several children's books and a book titled, "Poem Into Life" featuring a suite of her paintings was available in April of 2010.

She has a BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City and her Master's degree is from California State University, Northridge
