Statement
Explores the connection between aroma and memory, in the setting of a Zen-style Japanese laboratory with a 4 seasons theme. (Construction is ongoing: displayed is Quadrant 1 of a future 5 total.) The premise of the 5 section piece is what would things look like if a group of Zen Buddhists decided to run a lab that studied aroma and its effects on memory....and it took place in the 70?s. The ?Smell Lab? nick name refers to the famous Sky Lab of the 70s era
The piece is interactive...you have to spin the discs, choose an aroma, choose a season, etc, and experience them together.
Biography
A native of Boston, Paul moved to San Francisco 15 years ago. He has been producing art in different mediums for the past 25 years; in 1991 he settled on assemblage sculpture, perhaps latently influenced by a boyhood passion for collecting shelf after shelf of what his mother called \\
