Séamus O Dubsláine

The ‘Celtic’ Cross is a significantly important icon in Western Europe. Although the Celts were more or less subsumed by the Roman, Anglo, Franc and Germanic cultures by the end of the fifth century, the Celtic influence has remained. Carved stone so-called ‘Celtic’ High Crosses are found across Ireland, Scotland, Britain, Wales and Cornwall from the seventh century to this day.

For generations the ‘Celtic’ Cross in America has denoted Irishness and this is not lost on me. One of my ancestors was kidnapped as a child in Ireland around 1640, brought to Massachusetts and sold for his labor. Several others left Ireland early in the seventeen hundreds due to land confiscations there and still others left Ireland during the “famine” of the 1840’s - many of them more or less prospered in America but most were silent about their origins.

The influences of those people, their experiences and traditions, inspire me to overlay, intuitively, my impressions and emotional inheritance onto the ever abundant ‘Celtic’ Cross which they in their time beheld daily in Ireland.
