Susan Heldfond

Since helping to ignite the feminist movement in this country with the formation of "Bread and Roses" in Cambridge, 1969, I have been concerned with bringing a "visual voice" to the suffering of women throughout history. After relocating to New Mexico for a five year solo art/meditation/nature retreat, this series of images evolved out of highly visual, solo, movement theatre pieces . They abstract the deep interaction of women's connection with the earth and the yearning for the possibility of peace within one's life and in the world.

An extensive career as a dancer and performer in both classical and avant -garde theatre and film in New York and LA, from collaborations with Lee Breuer, of Mabou Mines to choreographing the film, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

In 1987 I moved to New Mexico to to begin a project that I call a bridge from the stage to paper.

It was provoked by my desire to create art for the women suffering in the middle east .

They have been published in the River Styx journal and exhibited most recently at the No-name Gallery in Atwater village.
