Statement

My inspiration is nature. My work is an ongoing study of the dynamic relationship between form and emotion.

Biography

Ushangi’s work is highly recognizable for its unique artistry and style, which stem from his inner vision and his immersion in the culture of his native Georgia and other ethnic cultures of the former Soviet Union.

His lifelong devotion to his art began at age 9 with his first stone sculpture, which was completed at age 11. His first award in competition came at age 13. Much other Soviet recognition followed, including: Young Georgians Award (1970), Union of Georgian Artists Award (1971), Moscow Art Fund Award (1973), first place in the All USSR Competition of 1981 for his Memorial Monument to Tsiolkovski, the leading Soviet Space Scientist.

In 1981 he was brought to Moscow as a sculptor for the Russian Department of Monuments. During this period, he was also Master/Teacher at the Moscow Studio of Fine Arts.

Ushangi is a 1968 Graduate of the State Art School, Tbilisi, Georgia and a 1972 Graduate of the Georgian National College of the Arts.

Since immigrating to the United States, Ushangi’s work has been exhibited and commissioned in Washington D.C., the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sierra Foothills and Los Angeles, where he currently resides.
